Literacy

March 1, 2012

literacy
Literacy is a Rotary project area that has both community and international project potential. Rotary International has partnered with the International Reading Association to offer guidance to clubs interested in providing programs in their local communities and abroad.

There are many ways local clubs can support their schools through book donations, mentoring students and working with teachers. Working with the local library is another way as well.

Bennington Rotary has already demonstrated its ability in this area. Not only is there a Rotary room in Bennington Free Library where the Four Way Test Speech Contest is held each year, but members of the club recently painted the upstairs halls for the library.

Members are also sorting books for the upcoming book sale.

In the past Bennington Rotarians gave generously during the Bennington Season of Mystery to buy a book box of mysteries and activity items for primary school age children to be distributed to schools in the area through the Children's Room of the Bennington Free Library.

There has also been discussion of a dictionary project which would distribute dictionaries to local school children. Some materials to aid literacy have also been taken to Somotillo, Bennington's sister city, where the Rotary Interact students visit every other year.

Bennington Rotary members will probably think of many more ways to help promote literacy for adults and children.
