The Bell Project
May 1, 2015
The Bell Project arose from resuming the tradition of ringing bells on July 4th. Jerry Albert had the idea for the bell ringing last July. He then became aware of the many bells that were a part of Bennington's history. Bells were used to summon people to church, but they were also used in factories to tell workers it was time to start the day. They were used to let people know court was in session and to gather people to fight fires.
With so many fine old bells in Bennington that needed repair it seemed like a good project for the Bennington Rotary. Besides having these restored bells ringing on Independence day, they could all ring at May Fest, on Bennington Battle Day and other important and festive days.
The first bell restoration is that from the Veterans Home. On Saturday, April 11, some Rotarians gathered at the home to take the bell to be repaired.
