Rotary's 105th Birthday
February 3, 2010
During the first Rotary club meeting on 23 February 1905 in Chicago GustavusLoehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey, and Paul Harris met to talk about their personal experiences. Harris then unfolded his general plan for their club meetings. He wanted to recreate the friendship he had known in the small towns of Vermont. The name Rotary resulted from their early practice of rotating meetings among the members' offices.
In honor of that first club, Rotarians have preserved its original meeting place, Room 711 in Chicago's Unity Building, by recreating the office as it existed in 1905.
