Michael Swinford - Our New District Governor

July 9, 2009

Our new District Governor has had a great deal of experience in Rotary as a member of eight different clubs in four states. Michael joined Rotary to meet people, have a good time and do some community service. He enjoyed meeting the variety of people that the Rotary classification system offered.

Michael's most memorable Rotary experience was being a Group Study Exchange Leader, as well as when he went to India, the year following a group that had been visiting here and saw what Rotary was doing in India.

Michael's advice to Rotarians is to get involved in a lot of different things and find out what they enjoy doing the most. Meeting people from other clubs is just a lot of fun. "What you get out of it is what you put into it."

Another piece of advice that Michael has about recruiting new members is, "All you have to do is ask."

When asked what were his goals as District Governor, Michael said, "I see the main purpose of Governor as being the person to support the Presidents and support the clubs to help them be successful. To be there when they need me."

Michael has worked in the business and academic worlds. He has worked for small companies and for huge corporations and had his own marketing company. On the way, he picked up graduate courses. The place where he was studying asked him to teach. When he did, he found he liked it and switched to teaching at various colleges, including Franklin Pierce University, Southern New Hampshire University among others.

For fun, when the weather is bad, Michael reads, but when the weather is good, he likes to work on his farm. Michael and his wife Rachel have two grown sons who have been going to Rotary with him since they were six or eight. They are also involved in community projects and will some day be Rotarians.
