Celebrate The Interact Club

May 1, 2013

Interact
On May 9, the Bennington Rotary Club will show its appreciation of the Interact Club at our Thursday night social. We have all seen the members in their red shirts helping out not only at Rotary functions, but at many other activities in town. Speaking with Jim Thibodeau who is the Bennington Rotary Club's liaison with the group, it is clear why we should be thankful for the work these young people do in our community.

The group, which was started by Sal Sarcantangelo and Jim Ross in 1992, is open to all high school students who wish to join. Some of them are members for their four years of high school. The meetings each Thursday morning are brief, starting at 7:15 and ending about 7:35. Each meeting begins with students recording the hours that they have worked on projects during the week. There are between 25 and 35 members at a meeting Often people come from other organizations to enlist the students' aid. The requirements will be outlined and the hands will go up to volunteer. The meeting concludes with a birthday song introduced by Jim and sung as the Bennington Rotary Club sings it. Every other year some members go to Somotillo, Nicaragua during winter break. This year 27 students and adults went down to help in that community as they do in ours. Dan Lucy is the faculty advisor and there are also members of the Catamount Club who, like Jim, work with the club, They are Charlie Letourneau, Ron Hausthor and Ed Smith.

Interact members will be helping out at the Bennington Road Race on May 5, handing out water and doing whatever else is necessary. They are regularly at the Car Show, at the Bennington Museum with The Festival of Trees, the Bennington Free Library book sale, the Penguin Plunge and bell ringing among other activities. The group has its own web site and Facebook page where they sign up for projects. These young people are learning service above self at an early age.
