Group Study Exchange
May 1, 2012
As we prepare for the visit of the Group Study Exchange team from Germany who will be visiting Bennington, on May 10, it is interesting to look at the history of the Exchange program. The Rotary International web site is a great source of information about Rotary's history.
The Rotary International Board of Directors and the Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees approved of the program as an official Rotary program in January, 1964. In that first year thirty-four teams from 17 pairs of districts took part in the first round during the 1965-66 and 1966-67 Rotary years. But Rotary had been supporting young people visiting other countries from1950 onwards. However it was in the 1960s that Rotarians began to consider having small groups of non-Rotarian business and professional men traveling from one Rotary District to another one in another country.
In the nearly five decades since, more than 70,000 young men and women have traveled the globe as part of Group Study Exchange teams.
At some future date we hope to provide the history of the Bennington Rotary Group Exchange.
